Written in 1930, The Public, also known as The Audience, remains a radical, provocative, and profoundly relevant work, a theatrical piece far ahead of its time, conceived to challenge the boundaries of the stage and reveal what society preferred to keep hidden.
Lorca leads us into the theater beneath the sand, a secret space where masks shatter, appearances collapse, and love confront a society determined to censor, control, and condemn it. Amid horses, ruins, impossible figures, and transforming bodies, surrealism turns the stage into a realm of dreams, desire, and rebellion. There, Lorca destroys theatrical conventions and poses a question that still unsettles us today: Are we capable of revealing our truth before the audience?
Nearly a century later, the work that Federico García Lorca himself considered part of his “unperformable theater”emerges with extraordinary force. Its struggle against intolerance, its defense of free love, and its call to live without masks make The Public an urgent, fierce, and hauntingly contemporary theatrical experience.
Escrita en 1930, El Público continúa siendo una obra radical, provocadora y profundamente vigente; un teatro adelantado a su tiempo, concebido para desafiar los límites de la escena y revelar aquello que la sociedad prefería mantener oculto.
Lorca nos conduce al teatro bajo la arena: un espacio secreto donde las máscaras se quiebran, las apariencias se derrumban y el amor se enfrenta a una sociedad que intenta censurarlo, domesticarlo y condenarlo. Entre caballos, ruinas, figuras imposibles y cuerpos en transformación, el surrealismo convierte el escenario en un territorio de sueños, deseo y rebelión. Allí, Lorca destruye las convenciones teatrales y plantea una pregunta que todavía nos sacude: ¿somos capaces de mostrar nuestra verdad ante el público?
Casi un siglo después, la obra que el propio Federico García Lorca consideraba parte de su “teatro irrepresentable” emerge con una fuerza extraordinaria. Su lucha contra la intolerancia, su defensa del amor libre y su llamado a vivir sin máscaras hacen de El Público una experiencia teatral urgente, feroz y estremecedoramente contemporánea.
